Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 foldable smartphone to feature waterproof body, periscope camera

After the recent launch of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, the Chinese smartphone maker is now gearing up to unveil a new foldable smartphone. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 will succeed last year’s Mix Fold 2. Now, recent reports provide insight into the specifications of the Mix Fold 3.

According to a post by tipster Digital Chat Station, the upcoming Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 will feature a periscope camera. However, there is no mention of the sensor used or the megapixel count. To recall, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 opted for an 8 MP telephoto shooter with 2x optical zoom.

The addition of the periscope camera sensor will improve the zoom capabilities of the Mix Fold 3. The tipster also notes that the Mix Fold 3 will feature a waterproof design, hinting towards an IP8X rating, although there is no mention of the rating, which suggests Xiaomi is still running tests to determine an official IP rating.

It seems like Xiaomi is looking to make big upgrades to the camera system of the Mix Fold 3, taking inspiration from the camera system of the recently launched Xiaomi 13 Ultra. Xiaomi could also leverage its partnership with Leica for the camera setup on the Mix Fold 3.

Improved Camera hardware on Foldables

The emphasis on camera on foldable smartphones doesn’t come as a surprise as OEMs are placing a heavy focus on optics. This was also the case with the Vivo X Fold 2 and Vivo X Flip, both of which use ZEISS optics and ZEISS T* lens coating, while the Oppo Find N2 and Find N2 Flip feature Hasselblad camera tuning.

The jury is still out on the camera system of the Mix Fold 3, although let’s not rule out the addition of the 1-inch camera sensor of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra. Digital Chat Station also noted that the Mix Fold 3 is said to be thinner and lighter than its predecessor. Xiaomi is yet to provide an official detail about its upcoming foldable phone, but we will update you as soon as they do.
