Samsung’s Exynos processors are generally regarded as inferior to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips. However, the bias is true, as the South Korean tech giant’s processors haven’t had the best run in recent years, with the disappointing launch of the Exynos 2200 being a major nail in the coffin for Samsung, as well as the company’s decision not to use its own chips for the flagship Galaxy S23 series.

But it appears that Samsung isn’t done yet, as the company is experimenting with a new Exynos 2500 processor with a custom GPU that incorporates the expertise of AMD, with whom Samsung recently renewed licensing.

Custom Samsung GPU to Use AMD’s Tech

A Twitter tipster Revegnus shared that Samsung is working on the Exynos 2500 together with AMD, in order to develop a high-performance chip for Galaxy devices. The tipster further adds that the processor will be based on AMD’s IP, but will focus on “catching optimization.”

The optimizations could refer to the company’s goal of improving thermal efficiency, as the Exynos 2200 was a toaster and thus couldn’t perform efficiently.

Exynos 2500 Isn’t Coming Any Time Soon

However, don’t hold your breath for this chip, as it will be years before it appears in any Galaxy device. Since Samsung is making this chip for Galaxy devices, it seems likely that the company will eventually stop using Qualcomm and start making its own chips for devices. However, given the fierce competition and the fact that Snapdragon chips outperform Exynos in general, Samsung must step up its game.

Exynos 2500 Could Be Fabricated on a 3nm Process

According to some rumors, Samsung may deliver processors on a newer second-generation 3nm GAA process by the second half of 2024. Given that the Exynos 2500 is still a few years away, Samsung could use this improved fabrication technology to deliver an optimized and efficient processor if there are no future roadblocks.
